Cabpool: split an Uber or Lyft with people going your way
An Uber or Lyft to the airport costs the same whether one person rides or four. Cabpool lets you post the trip you're already taking so people heading the same way can join and split the fare. It's free, and it works anywhere in California and Nevada.
Going somewhere soon?
Post your pickup, drop-off and time. You'll see a fare estimate and what each person would pay.
Post a cabpoolHow it works
- Post your trip. Add your pickup, drop-off and time, and whether it's an Uber, Lyft or Waymo. Say how many people are in your group and how many spots are open, up to six people in total.
- People going the same way join. Each person who joins can bring a friend or two. You can chat in the app to settle the pickup spot.
- Ride and split the fare. At pickup, one person books the ride in their own app. They add the final fare in Seat Sherpa, everyone sees their share, and each person pays them directly.
What it costs
Cabpool is free. Seat Sherpa doesn't book, run or charge for the ride, and takes nothing from the fare. When you post, we estimate the fare from typical rideshare prices, including airport fees and bridge tolls, and show the range each person pays: the low end if the car fills up, the high end if fewer people join. A $48 fare split four ways is $12 each.
Best for airport runs
Most cabpools go to or from an airport: SFO, Oakland (OAK), San Jose (SJC), Sacramento (SMF), LAX, Burbank (BUR), Long Beach (LGB), Ontario (ONT), Orange County (SNA) and San Diego (SAN). They also work for campus trips, concerts and games, late nights, and anywhere a solo ride feels expensive.
Privacy and safety
Everyone in a cabpool has a profile with a photo and their first name. Before you join, a cabpool shows only the neighborhood or a public place like a station, never a home address; the exact address is shared only with the people in that cabpool. You can leave before the ride, the person who posted can remove someone, and anyone can be reported or blocked.
Not affiliated with Uber, Lyft or Waymo
Seat Sherpa isn't affiliated with Uber, Lyft or Waymo. Cabpool only connects people going the same way; members book and pay for the ride between themselves.
Going city to city instead?
For a longer trip like San Francisco to Los Angeles, a Seat Sherpa carpool with a driver already making the drive usually costs far less than any rideshare. See routes and prices.
FAQ
What is Cabpool?
Cabpool is a free Seat Sherpa feature for sharing an Uber, Lyft or Waymo with people going the same way and splitting the fare. You post the trip you are already taking, and others heading the same direction join.
Is Cabpool free?
Yes. Seat Sherpa does not charge for cabpools and takes no part of the fare. Members split the ride's own fare among themselves.
Does Seat Sherpa book the Uber or Lyft?
No. One member books the ride in their own Uber, Lyft or Waymo app at pickup, and everyone else pays them their share directly. Seat Sherpa is not affiliated with Uber, Lyft or Waymo.
How is the fare split?
Evenly, per person, and a group counts as its number of people, so two friends pay two shares. When you post, the app shows a fare estimate that includes airport fees and bridge tolls, and the range each person pays depending on how many join. Once the ride is booked, the real fare goes in the app and everyone sees their exact share.
How many people can share a cabpool?
Up to six in total, counting the group of the person who posted it. For three or more people with bags, an UberXL or Lyft XL usually fits everyone.
Can I split an Uber or Lyft to the airport?
Yes, that is the most common cabpool. Post your pickup, the airport and your time, or join someone else's trip to or from SFO, OAK, SJC, SMF, LAX, BUR, LGB, ONT, SNA, SAN and other California and Nevada airports.
What if a cabpool is full?
Join the waitlist. If a spot opens, you get a notification or an email and can join before it fills again. You can also post your own cabpool on the same route.
Is my address public?
No. Before you join, a cabpool shows only the neighborhood or a public place like a station or an airport. The exact pickup address is shared only with the people in that cabpool.
